Anne Collier, moderator

Anne Collier is executive director of The Net Safety Collaborative, a national nonprofit organization now piloting the U.S.'s first Internet helpline for schools. TNSC was formed through a merger of #iCANHELP, a national nonprofit founded by student leadership educators Kimberly Karr and Matthew Soeth in 2014, and Net Family News Inc., which Collier founded in 1999.

 

Anne has written and spoken widely on the subject of youth and digital media, served on three national task forces on youth Internet safety and currently serves on the Trust & Safety advisory boards of Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat and ASKfm. From 2005 until 2015 she was co-director of ConnectSafely.org with technology journalist Larry Magid, her co-author of the first parents’ guide to teen social networking, MySpace Unraveled (Peachpit Press, 2006). She blogs at NetFamilyNews.org and lives with her family in Vashon, Washington.

Alan Katzman, moderator

Alan Katzman is the founder and CEO of Social Assurity LLC and a leading advocate for teaching effective social media use at all educational levels. 

 

Social Assurity is the preeminent social media education company for high school and college students. Social Assurity delivers in-depth and well-designed eCourses and live workshops that convey the social media skills and tools students require to create a proactive and productive social media presence, to enhance a student's digital footprint in the college application process as well as for social recruiting, internship and job opportunities.

Later this fall, Alan will be teaching his social media course for The School of The New York Times and his work has been featured in many leading publications including Business Insider, Social Media Today, and the Huffington Post.

Mike Ribble, Moderator

Dr. Mike Ribble author of the books Digital Citizenship in Schools (now in its 3rd edition) and Raising a Digital Child has worked within the education field his entire career. He has been a science educator and an assistant principal at the secondary level. Dr. Ribble has taught as an adjunct faculty member at the community college and the university level. Currently, he works as the director of technology for a school district in Kansas.

 

Dr. Ribble has spoken on the topic of digital citizenship to parents, teachers and students in the United States and internationally. He has written articles for THE Magazine, District Administrator, Leading & Learning, Kappa Delta Pi Record and Innovate My School. Dr. Ribble is interested in helping students, teachers and parents understand the issues around technology and how to use these tools appropriately. His current work is focused around character education and how that can improve user’s online profile.

Lynette Owens, Moderator

Lynette T. Owens is the founder and Global Director of Trend Micro’s Internet Safety for Kids and Families (ISKF) program. After many years in technology marketing roles and serving as Associate Vice President of corporate marketing for Trend Micro, Lynette founded the ISKF program in 2008 to help deliver on the company’s vision of making a world safe for the exchange of digital information. The program is now active in 19 countries.

As a pro-technology parent and Internet safety advocate, Lynette spends most of her time raising awareness and educating the public about the safe and responsible use of the Internet, recruiting fellow employee volunteers to get involved around the world, or volunteering her own time in her community. She speaks at public conferences and schools around the country and world, and blogs regularly on a wide range of issues pertaining to online safety and digital literacy.

In early 2010, Lynette was instrumental in launching “What’s Your Story?” an annual international campaign designed to give youth a voice and role in influencing their peers on the safe and responsible use of technology. Lynette is a board member of the National Association of Media Literacy Education and SPARK Kindness, and serves on the advisory boards of INHOPE and U.S. Safer Internet Day.

Kristin Ziemke

Kristin Ziemke has spent her career teaching and learning from children in both urban and suburban school districts. As a teacher of primary age learners in Chicago, Kristin engages students in authentic learning experiences where reading, thinking, collaboration and inquiry are at the heart of the curriculum.

 

Author of Amplify: Digital Teaching and Learning in the K-6 Classroom and co-author of Connecting Comprehension and Technology, Kristin pairs best practice instruction with digital tools to transform learning in the classroom and beyond. An Apple Distinguished Educator, National Board Certified Teacher and Chicago’s 2013 Tech Innovator of the Year, Kristin seeks opportunities to transform education through technology innovation. She collaborates with educators around the globe as a staff developer, speaker and writer.

Nancy Watson

 

Nancy Watson has been an early childhood teacher and a middle school librarian, and is currently an Instructional Technology Specialist in a school district near Dallas, Texas. She has a passion for improving students' digital literacy and digital citizenship, and loves to help teachers find just the right technology tool to enhance a learning experience.

 

Currently working on a Master of Education in Digital Learning and Leading, Nancy loves both being in school and her job for all the learning opportunities she receives each day. Nancy's easy-going and humorous style makes her a popular presenter within her school district and beyond. She has presented at the Region 10 Tech Conference, ASCD-Texas, and TCEA, and ISTE.

Michelle Linford

Michelle Linford is the Executive Director of EPIK Deliberate Digital. EPIK's mission is to facilitate a collaborative community culture that involves youth in positive, deliberate digital citizenship. EPIK works at both the state and national level with strategic partners from a variety of spheres. In 2015, EPIK played an important role in helping Utah be the first state to pass digital citizenship legislation.

Amitabh Kumar (India)

Amitabh Kumar studied microsystem technics at Freiburg Germany. After completing his studies in Europe he returned to India and joined the gender movement. He is a true believer of using technology for sustainable social change and has been working as a gender trainer for the past 8 years. Amitabh has created numerous awareness generation campaigns leveraging social media and technology.

 

The flagship initiative in this arena is #SocialSurfing, which he conceptualized. This programme went across 36 colleges in India in the year 2015 and initiated conversations on online safety mechanisms, use of social media for social change and counter speech. The second phase of the programme has alreadbeen rolled out this year and it aims at reaching out to 100 educational institutions. Connect at @AmiFromIndia.

Michelle Drouin

Dr. Michelle Drouin is a developmental psychologist (B.A. Cornell University, D.Phil. University of Oxford), professor, and internationally-recognized speaker on technology and relationships, including online relationships, social media, and sexting.

 

Dr. Drouin’s research on sexting, social media, and mobile phone addiction has attracted international attention, and she regularly does interviews for television, radio, newspapers, and magazines. Her research has been cited in a number of prominent news sources including CNN, NPR, MSNBC, CBS News, The New York Times, Huffington Post, Reuters, Men’s Health, Parenting Magazine, and Psychology Today.

Sarah Gretter

Sarah Gretter is a doctoral candidate in Educational Psychology & Educational Technology at Michigan State University. She also holds a Ph.D. in literary studies from Purdue University, as well as an Ed.M. from Harvard University. Her work focuses on helping educators gain the media & information literacy skills needed to help students become digital citizens in our hyper-connected world.

Carrie Rogers-Whitehead

Carrie Rogers-Whitehead teaches information science and digital literacy, is a free lance journalist, former librarian and current CEO of Digital Respons-Ability. Carrie founded Digital Respons-Ability after working over a decade in the information science field and feels passionate about media and digital literacy and equitable access.

Casper Pieters (Australia)

Casper Pieters started as a marine biologist. He climbed back on the land doing his doctorate on Koala ecology. He became part of a team that made award-winning science docos (Redesign my Brain) and developed an interest in teaching young people. In schools, he discovered the disruptive effects of technology. In response, he created a 3-tiered eLearning platform that fosters dialogue between students, parents, and teachers about Digital Citizenship.

 

He is now writing the adventures of Team Savv-i, an engaging series about Digital Citizenship that starts with a number of graphic novels for elementary, an educfictional novel for Middle school and culminates as a series of Apps for High school students. Jennifer Forsberg

Jennifer Forsberg is the Director of Technology for the Bronxville School District in New York.  As the Director she oversees and coordinates technology as it relates to Curriculum & Instruction, Infrastructure, Budget, Professional Development, Communications as well as Data & Assessment.  Ms. Forsberg collaborates with administrators and teachers to create educational technology environments that promote 21st Century Skills for all learners as well as ensuring students are safe online.  This work includes parent education around "digital parenting" by providing daytime and evening sessions dedicated to digital citizenship. 

 

Recently, Ms. Forsberg was invited to the Tech & Learning School CIO Summit in Denver where educators from across the country collaborated with a focus on Digital Citizenship and Privacy & Security.  Ms. Forsberg has presented locally, regionally and nationally on topics including Innovative Learning, Using Data in the Classroom,  Promoting Student Leadership and Google Apps for Education.  She is a Google Certified Trainer and Google Certified Administrator.  The Bronxville School won the District Pioneer Award in 2016 for work around Digital Citizenship and the new Student Help Desk. She has recently started a Facebook page for parents and educators regarding digital citizenship called Digi City.

Erin Reilly

Erin is known for bridging industry and academia and oversees all aspects of USC’s Annenberg Innovation Lab programming. Her research focuses on new media literacies, transmedia play and learning, fan engagement and the future of media and entertainment.  

 

Before coming to USC, Erin was Research Director for Project New Media Literacies at MIT. Some of her publications include T is for Transmedia: Learning through Transmedia PlayPLAY! (Participatory learning and you), and Designing with Teachers. She is a member of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, the Vice President board member of NAMLE (National Association for Media Literacy Educators) and serves on advisory boards, such as Disney Junior.

Chris Priebe

Chris Priebe has over 20 years’ experience fostering positive online communities, and is currently the CEO of Two Hat Security. A father of four, he is deeply passionate about making the internet a safer place. Chris was the lead developer on the safety and security elements for Club Penguin, which was acquired by Disney and grew to over 300 million users.

 

In 2012, Chris started Community Sift, driven by a desire to tackle the major issues of cyberbullying, harassment, and abuse across the entire internet. Today, Community Sift protects some of the world's leading social products, united in a vision to create healthier online communities for everyone.

Kelly Leahy Whitney 

Dr. Kelly Leahy Whitney is Chief Product and Partnerships Officer for iCivics, an award winning civics education non-profit that was founded by Justice Sandra Day O'Connor.  

 

A unique professional bridging research, development, and production, Dr. Whitney’s expertise is applying educational research to the most highly engaging forms of media and technology to promote student learning. Dr. Whitney has developed and produced broadcast and digital media for a variety of highly-lauded organizations, including PBS, Nickelodeon, and Discovery Communications.  She has collaborated on research involving learning, technology, and cultural studies at Harvard University, MIT, and PBS; she has spoken on educational technology in many forums, including presentations at SXSW, Harvard University, and the London School of Economics. Dr. Whitney serves on the Board of Directors for the National Association for Media Literacy Education; she has served on advisory boards and panels for organizations including the White House and the American Association of Pediatrics. 

 

Dr. Whitney earned her doctorate in education from Harvard University and was awarded the Fred Rogers Memorial Scholarship for her dissertation research. She is proud to be an alumna of Northwestern University and the American School of Paris. She currently resides in the Washington, D.C. area.

Kristen Mattson

Kristen Mattson is a Library Media Specialist serving a large high school in the western suburbs of Chicago. In this role, she partners with teachers in all content areas to integrate digital literacy, research skills, creation and innovation in the classroom. As part of a Future Ready school district, Kristen has embraced the Future Ready Librarians framework, transforming her own school's space and practices and supporting fellow librarians by hosting site visits, facilitating professional development, blogging about her experiences, and moderating the Future Ready Librarians' Facebook group.

 

Kristen recently completed a critical discourse analysis on three leading digital citizenship curricula for her doctoral dissertation, and a portion of her work will be published in the The International Handbook of Media Literacy Education scheduled for release from Routledge in March of 2017. Kristen will graduate from Northern Illinois University this December with an Ed.D. in Curriculum and Instruction Leadership. Her research interests include digital citizenship, media literacy, social justice and the interactions between them.

Derek Larson

J. Derek Larson taught 4th and 5th grades at Little Valley Elementary for 8 years, absolutely loving every minute, before becoming the Technology Director for the Southwest Educational Development Center (SEDC) in Southern Utah.

 

Having completed his M.Ed. with an emphasis in technology, he feels technology is one of the most crucial aspects of teaching because of the way students are excited by and look forward to using it. If educators can find ways to effectively harness technology into their teaching, they will be better able to reach their students and help them catch the excitement of learning. This is one of Derek's new goals as he works with teachers in rural districts across Southwestern Utah. Derek currently serves as a member of the UCET Board and the SUECON Committee.

Sr. Nancy Usselmann

 

Sr. Nancy is a Media Literacy Education Specialist and Director of the Pauline Center for Media Studies, Culver City, CA. She is a member of the Daughters of St. Paul and has degrees in Communications Arts and Theology and Arts. She has extensive experience in the creative aspects of social media, print media production, radio and video production as well as in marketing, advertising, retail management and media administration.

 

For over 20 years, Sr. Nancy has given numerous media literacy workshops, presentations and media retreats around the country. She is a member of NAMLE (National Association for Media Literacy Education), SIGNIS (World Catholic Association for Communication), and a contributing theologian at THEOCOM (Theology and Communications in Dialogue). Jennifer Casa Todd

Jennifer is the Teacher-Librarian at Cardinal Carter, an IB World School in Aurora, Ontario.  Prior to this role she was the Literacy Consultant for the York Catholic District School Board and one of the lead learners in a District-wide initiative to build 21st century competencies using technology.  She is  currently a grad student at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology where where she is studying the role of social media in education.  

Her passion is to connect students to each other, to organizations and to the world using technology. to build empathy and transform learning experiences.  She advocates for a more positive and integrated approach to teaching digital citizenship: digital leadership, and is currently writing a book which is set to be released in the Spring by Dave Burgess Consulting, which builds upon the idea of empowering students to become Digital Leaders using social media. She is also a wife and mom of two teenage daughters whose love and support inspire and sustain her and a networked educator who readily learns and shares her learning with and from educators across the globe.

Jaime Donally

Jaime Donally is a passionate technology enthusiast.  She began her career as a math teacher, and eventually taught grades from Pre-K through 8th grade.  During that time, she used multiple technology resources to engage students and improve learning.  

 

As an edtech presenter, she provides staff development and training on trending technology topics.  Her latest adventures include the startup of EdChange Global (formerly edcamp Global) and Global Maker Day.

Liz Repking

As the founder of Cyber Safety Consulting, Liz’s technology and training experience is perfectly paired with her passion for digital citizenship. She believes that every parent has the ability and responsibility to understand the technology and social networking sites that children are frequenting. She is also the founder of the CASE program, Cyber Awareness & Safety Education, which is implemented in middle schools nationwide.

Over 4 years ago, Liz became acutely aware of the dangers the Internet posed to children like her own. While parents recognize these dangers, they are uncomfortable and even intimidated by the depth and breadth of the technology their children use. This led Liz to create Cyber Safety Consulting with the goal of educating parents, children, and school educators on the safe, savvy, and ethical use of the digital world.

Tessa Jolls

Tessa Jolls is President and CEO of the Center for Media Literacy, a position she has held since 1999. She also founded the Consortium for Media Literacy, a nonprofit which provides research and a monthly newsletter publication.  During her tenure at CML, Jolls' primary focus is working in partnership to demonstrate how media literacy works through school and community-based implementation programs. She actively contributes to the development of the media literacy field internationally through her speaking, writing and consulting, with curriculum development and research projects, and through publishing and disseminating new curricular and training materials.

In 2015, Jolls received the Global Media and Information Literacy Award, in recognition of her work in Media and Information Literacy and Intercultural Dialogue, from the UNESCO-initiated Global Alliance for Partnerships on Media and Information Literacy (GAPMIL), in cooperation with the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC).   In 2014, Jolls was honored with the International Media Literacy Award by Gateway Media Literacy Partners; in 2013, she was  recognized with the Jesse McCanse Award for Individual Contribution to Media Literacy by the National Telemedia Council.

Brianna Brown

Award winning Minnesota born actress Brianna Brown has starred in numerous high profile roles throughout the years.  She is most recognized for starring on the hit series Homeland on Showtime, as the "love to hate" villain Dr. Lisa Niles on ABC's Emmy award winning General Hospital and as a series regular on Lifetime's hit show Devious Maids.  

 

Brianna is a Chair Ambassador for the National Women's History Museum and in 2006 Brianna founded "The New Hollywood" (TNH).  TNH is a philanthropic women's goal group and 501(c)(3) non-profit.  TNH encourages women within the entertainment industry to achieve their personal and professional best, to be positive role models within the entertainment industry and most importantly to give back! In 2016 Brianna formed an LGBT branch of TNH further spread the mission of The New Hollywood.

Molly Schoneveld

 

Molly Schoneveld is the president of SW PR Shop, a boutique entertainment and lifestyle public relations firm formed in 2008. With over 15 years of experience in the industry, she specializes in entertainment talent as well as lifestyle experts and interior designers.

She got her start in public relations at powerhouse entertainment firm PMK/BNC (then PMK/HBH), where she helped develop publicity campaigns for A- list talent, producers and directors. She also served on the Sundance Film Festival team overseeing the day-to-day schedules of their slate of films during the run of the festival.

Molly began her career as an assistant to Academy Award-winning producer, Brian Grazer at Imagine Entertainment, the year he won Best Film for “A Beautiful Mind.” This rare opportunity gave her an inside look into many different aspects of the entertainment industry and led to three years at Tapestry Films, where she assisted in all areas of development and production on such films as “Wedding Crashers” and “Underclassman.” She currently resides in Los Angeles, but will always call North Carolina home. 

Erin McNeill 

 

Erin McNeill is a nationally recognized expert on policy related to media literacy and digital citizenship. She is the founder and president of Media Literacy Now, an education policy initiative that is sparking state-by-state legislative action to ensure that all K-12 schools are teaching a comprehensive set of media literacy and digital citizenship skills. Media Literacy Now has provided guidance and resources in 17 states, and this year MLN was instrumental in helping advocates pass two laws, including a law in Washington state that serves as a national model for making media literacy and digital citizenship part of the state’s formal education policy. MediaLiteracyNow.org curates a database of legislation and policy concerning media literacy, digital citizenship, social media, and internet safety.  

In addition, Erin is a journalist who writes and speaks often about the influences of media messages on children, especially with parents in mind. Previously in her career she covered a wide range of topics from pandemics, disasters, and local politics in San Francisco; to environmental and economic policy in Washington DC; to arts in Massachusetts.

Digital Citizenship Panel:

 

This panel will answer the question, “What now for digital citizenship?” The discussion will go beyond just curriculum resources. For example, how to embed the 9 elements of digital citizenship into EVERYTHING we are doing in the classroom and beyond. Discussion will include thoughts on how where the online safety conversation belongs now that much of what we are seeing in digital citizenship is about empowerment and not protection. 

Literacy Panel:

 

This panel will answer the question, “What is the connection between media literacy and digital citizenship?” It should explore how media literacy fits into digital citizenship (or vice versa) and how media literacy can act as an effective strategy to explore both digital citizenship and online safety in the classroom and beyond. The goal of this panel is to build the bridge between media literacy and digital citizenship. 

Innovation Panel:

 

This panel should answer the question,  “How can we think outside of the box regarding teaching and spreading digital citizenship and media literacy?” This panel should explore innovative practices within the community. This panel is about inventive and original application of practice and is meant to inspire.

Advocacy Panel:

 

This panel will answer the question, “What do we have to do to see digital citizenship and media literacy be the norm in schools around the country?” This panel should explore outreach success stories and discuss how to engage all stakeholders in this movement.  As the last panel of the summit, this panel should encourage specific action from attendees and provide an answer to “What is next?”
